This is a series based on the novel Flight Over a Cuckoo’s Nest by American writer Ken Kesey, and more specifically on the character of nurse Mildred Ratched, whose life before the events of the novel.
In 1947, nurse Mildred Ratched arrived in Lucia, Northern California. Former nurse of war, Mildred wants to join the team of the psychiatric hospital of Dr. Richard Hanover. In reality, she hides secrets, a very dark face as well as a link with Edmund Tolleson, a man arrested for having violently murdered a group of priests.
Arrived at the hospital, she will witness practices close to torture such as lobotomy. His meeting with Gwendolyn Briggs, the campaign manager for the governor of California, will also change his life.

Ratched Season Reviews
When it aired, the series’ first season divided critics in the United States. On Rotten Tomatoes, it gets 59% positive reviews, with an average rating of 6.33 / 10 based on 37 positives and 26 negative reviews. The critical consensus established by the site sums up that the series is “undeniably elegant but that the salacious filler plots and cartoonish characters undermine its magnificent production and committed performances.”
Indeed, the excess of intrigue and the writing of individual characters are pointed out by the American critics. Still, the performances of the actors, in particular, Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon, as well as the direction, the decorations and the costumes are praised.
