Actress Millie Bobby Brown signs to play the title role but also to co-produce the film.
At the beginning of 2020, as the world is affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Netflix service begins to acquire several films whose production has been completed to ensure that it can offer content to its subscribers, the epidemic had caused the interruption shootings. The service then begins negotiations with Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. to recover the distribution rights of the film to distribute it on its platform.
In April 2020, Netflix announces that it has officially acquired the distribution rights for the film which will be offered on its platform as an original production.
Distribution of roles
Millie Bobby Brown is the first actress to join the project when it was announced in February 2019. In June 2019, she was followed by Helena Bonham Carter who signs for the role of the mother of Enola as well as by Henry Cavill who will play the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. That same month, Adeel Akhtar and Fiona Shaw also join cast.

The shooting of Enola Holmes
The filming begins in July 2019in London, the capital of the United Kingdom. Some scenes also took place at the Luton Hoo, a mansion in the town of Luton.
In April 2019, Daniel Pemberton was announced to compose the music for the film.
In the United States, the film received a mostly positive reception from critics. On the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, it obtains a score of 92% positive reviews, with an average score of 7.11 / 10 based on 92 reviews, allowing it to get the “Fresh” label, the certificate site quality.
According to the critical consensus written by the site, the film brings “a breath of fresh air to Baker Street“. It also highlights the performance of Millie Bobby Brown, well received by critics.
Shortly after Netflix acquired the film, it was announced that Arthur Conan Doyle’s rights holders, the Conan Doyle Estate, were attacking the novelist behind the series of novels, Nancy Springer, as well as her publisher. Penguin Random House, for copyright and trademark infringement.
In “The Enola Holmes Investigations”, Sherlock Holmes is presented as warmer and capable of feeling emotions. According to the rights holders, these personality traits were introduced in the works of Arthur Conan Doyle published after 1923, which are not yet in the public domain, unlike those published before this year and which can be used freely.
This version of the character is therefore still protected by copyright and can only be used with permission, which is not the case with the series of novels and its adaptation. Nancy Springer and the production of the film would therefore be breaking the law using this version of Sherlock Holmes. Netflix, Legendary Pictures and the producers of the film adaptation are also targeted in the complaint because they are adapting the Springer novels.
