Mohammad Nawaz is known for his left-arm spin bowling and is also good with the bat, making him a valuable all-rounder for the Pakistan cricket team. He started playing international cricket for Pakistan in 2016. Before playing for the national team, Nawaz performed well in domestic cricket and the Pakistan Super League (PSL).  His journey to international cricket was marked by his performance in the PSL, which caught the attention of the national selectors.

In 2016, the Quetta Gladiators picked Nawaz to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). In his very first game against Islamabad United, he did great by taking 4 wickets and only giving away 13 runs in 4 overs. He ended up being one of the top players in taking wickets in that tournament. This great start got him a place in Pakistan’s team for the ICC World Twenty20 in 2016. Because he played so well in 2016, the Quetta Gladiators wanted him back for the next season in 2017. That year, he took 10 wickets over 10 games.

In April 2018, he was chosen to help lead the team for Balochistan in the Pakistan Cup, where he performed the best by taking 9 wickets in just four games. Later, in 2018, he joined the Balkh team for the Afghanistan Premier League’s first season. By 2019, he was part of the Federal Areas team for the Pakistan Cup, then played for the Edmonton Royals in Canada’s Global T20 tournament, and was picked for the Belfast Titans in the Euro T20 Slam. However, that tournament was cancelled.

He continued to play in various leagues, including for the Cape Town Blitz in the Mzansi Super League in 2019, for Northern in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, and for the Rajshahi Royals in the Bangladesh Premier League. By January 2021, he became the captain of the Northern team for the Pakistan Cup.

Mohammad Nawaz played his first T20 International cricket match for Pakistan against the United Arab Emirates in the Asia Cup on February 29, 2016. In this match, he gave away 38 runs in 3 overs. The team’s captain, Shahid Afridi, chose him to bowl, which led to criticism from Waqar Younis, the head coach. Younis thought it was not right to let Nawaz bowl so early in his career, saying it hurt Nawaz’s confidence.

Later, on August 18, 2016, Nawaz played his first One Day International match for Pakistan against Ireland and scored fifty runs. He was also named the best player of the game in the final match of the National T20 Cup in September 2016.

Nawaz made his debut in Test cricket for Pakistan in a game against the West Indies in Dubai on October 13, 2016. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in June 2020, he was selected as a backup player for Pakistan’s cricket team tour to England. In September 2021, he was chosen to be part of Pakistan’s team for the T20 World Cup happening that year.

In July 2022, in a match against Sri Lanka, Nawaz took five wickets in a Test match for the first time. Then, in September 2022, he played a key role in Pakistan’s victory against India in the Asia Cup, which was a historic win for Pakistan. It was the highest number of runs Pakistan had ever chased to win against India in a T20 International match, and Nawaz’s performance earned him the title of the best player of the match for his contributions.
