Mohammad Irfan Introduction

Mohammad Irfan Biography

Mohammad Irfan, born on June 6, 1982, in Gaggoo Mandi, Pakistan, is a promising Pakistani cricketer known for his right-handed batting and right-arm medium-fast bowling. He began his journey in cricket by transitioning from tape-ball to hard-ball in 2015, joining the Ikram Shaheed Cricket Club. His early talent was evident as he played Under-19 cricket at the district level with Mianwali in 2016 and at the regional level with Faisalabad in 2017.

Mohammad Irfan Domestic and Franchise Career

First-class contract

Irfan, who was training at the National Cricket Academy, caught the attention of many big cricket teams, like Habib Bank and ZTBL. But it was Azhar Ali, an opener for KRL, who got Irfan a chance to try out for Khan Research Laboratories (KRL). Azhar had watched Irfan take 4 wickets in a game against Pakistan A and quickly told KRL that Irfan would be a great addition to their team. Irfan tried out and was chosen for the team.

His first big game was in October 2009, playing for Khan Research Laboratories in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. In this game, he bowled well but didn’t manage to get any wickets, even though there were lots of runs scored. In his next big game, Irfan did really well, taking 7 wickets in one innings and 9 in the whole game. His first professional wicket was Ahmed Shehzad, a young Pakistani player. He also got Imran Farhat out and hurt Hasan Raza with a fast ball before getting him out too.

Irfan kept doing well in his early games. In his third match, he took 11 wickets, which helped his team win their first championship game. He got 5 wickets in the first innings and 6 in the second.

T20 franchise career

Irfan agreed to play for a team called Kolkata Knight Riders in a big cricket league in India (IPL) in 2011. This agreement was only okay if the cricket boards of Pakistan and India said yes. Wasim Akram, a famous Pakistani cricket player, told Kolkata Knight Riders about Irfan, and that’s why they wanted him. Irfan would get $75,000 plus $2,000 for each game he played, but this needed approval from the cricket boards in India and Pakistan.

In June 2018, Irfan was picked to play for a team called Edmonton Royals in a new cricket tournament in Canada called Global T20 Canada. He did really well, taking 6 wickets in 6 games.

Then, in August 2018, playing in the Caribbean Premier League, Irfan only let the other team score 1 run and took 2 wickets in 4 overs. This was a record for being really good at stopping runs in a short time.

In September 2018, he was chosen to play for a team in Afghanistan, and the next month for a team in Bangladesh. In 2019, he played for another team in Bangladesh, and they won the league. Irfan took 2 wickets in the final game. In November 2021, he was selected to play for a team in Sri Lanka. In 2022, Irfan played for a team called Quetta Gladiators in Pakistan.

Mohammad Irfan’s International Career

Mohammad Irfan’s International Career

Early days

Irfan used to work at a pipe factory and earned very little money (300 rupees per week) before he was noticed by Nadeem Iqbal, a former cricket player, during a club match. This led to him joining the Pakistan national cricket team when he was 28 years old. He replaced two famous Pakistani bowlers, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, who were in trouble for cheating in 2010. It was a big chance for Irfan to do well for Pakistan.

But his first big international game against England in 2010 was cut short by bad weather. He couldn’t take any wickets and gave up 37 runs. He also had to leave the game early because of muscle pain. People were not very happy with how he played because he wasn’t bowling very fast, only around 130-135 km/h. Pakistan lost that game.

However, Irfan got better. He played again in December 2012 against India. This time, he bowled much faster, up to 145 km/h. His fast bowling helped Pakistan win. Even a famous player from India, Virat Kohli, was surprised by how fast Irfan was bowling. Irfan said in 2020 that Kohli expected him to bowl slower, but he was actually bowling close to 150 km/h.

Irfan’s Breakthrough Performance in South Africa, 2013

Irfan got really good at cricket and the people who chose players for Pakistan’s team were impressed. They called him a “surprise package” when he played in South Africa in March 2013. He played well and made it hard for the South African players to score because he was fast and tall. In the first part of the game, he got 3 players out and had one time when no one scored in his 21 overs. He gave up 86 runs, which isn’t too many. But in the second part of the game, he didn’t get anyone out and gave up 35 runs in 10 overs.

2017 suspension

Irfan was not allowed to play cricket for a while starting on 29 March 2017. This decision was made by the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) because he didn’t tell them about two times when people tried to cheat in the game during the 2017 Pakistan Super League. The ban actually started from 14 March 2017, which was when they first stopped him from playing. They also made him pay a fine of 1 million Pakistani rupees. Irfan could play again after six months if he helped the PCB with their investigations and followed the rules against cheating during that time.
