McHale was born in Rome on November 20, 1971, to Jack McHale and Laurie McHale, who worked as the Director of Students at Loyola University’s Rome Center. His father is from Chicago, Illinois, while his mother is from Vancouver, British Columbia. McHale was reared Catholic and is of Irish and Norwegian ancestry.
