Under the Afghan peace deal, the release of prisoners should begin soon, Zalmay Khalilzad

Zalmay Khalilzad, the US Special Representative for the Afghan Peace Process, expressed disappointment at the release of prisoners despite the agreement, calling for the release of prisoners as soon as possible.

Under a peace agreement between the United States and Afghanistan, the two sides agreed to release the prisoners, but after several weeks, the US Special Representative has called for the process to begin soon after the release of the prisoners has not begun.

"Particularly in view of the increased risk of corona virus, patients need to be released immediately. It is time, we are determined to play our role after consultation with the stakeholders," he tweeted.

He said that the US understands that the technical teams of the two sides need to focus on technical steps to work together and begin the release of prisoners as soon as possible and I will attend the preliminary meetings.

Zalmay Khalilzad said that I would prefer a bilateral meeting, but because of the Corona virus and the resulting travel restrictions, online contact is needed.

He said the Taliban had promised that the released prisoners would not step back into the battlefield in accordance with the peace treaty and that the breach would affect the deal.

He said that now the issue of release of prisoners needs to proceed, the US wants to release the prisoners as soon as possible under the agreement because no prisoner release is yet in the process despite assurances from both sides.

Remember that a historic peace agreement was signed between the US and the Taliban on February 29 last month to end the longest war in US history for more than 18 years, including the release of prisoners.

But on the second day of the signing of a peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban, on March 1, the Afghan president, in his statement, rejected the release of Taliban prisoners, saying that the agreement between the United States and the Taliban did not include a clause regarding the release of prisoners.

However, Ashraf Ghani, after taking oath as the president of Afghanistan for a second term, said that the procedure for release of prisoners with the Taliban has been finalized and a presidential decree will be issued in this regard, but the matter is still pending.
