More than 300 legislators, unable to submit asset details

Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is ready to suspend the membership of more than 300 members of the Assembly and Senate after lawmakers have not submitted their assets and liabilities annually till the final date.

Under the law, all lawmakers are required to submit details of their own, spouse's and dependent children's assets to the Election Commission every year.

The deadline for filing assets details before the amendment to the Election Act 2017 was September 30 and the Election Commission could suspend the membership of those who did not submit the details by October 15.

However, the law was later amended in the name of electoral reforms and the deadline was extended to December 31, but a 15-day grace period means that their membership will not be suspended before January 16.
