For the first time, a black woman holds the top position in a leading fashion magazine

For the first time in its 150-year history, the multinational fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar has appointed a black woman as its editor-in-chief.

Harper's Bazaar is a multinational fashion magazine that started in the United States, which currently has separate editions from other countries, including the United Kingdom, while the magazine is published in languages ​​other than English and Arabic.

The magazine is owned by Hurst Communications Company, a subsidiary of several newspapers, magazines and TV channels, and shares in ESPN, a leading sports channel, including Walt Disney. The first issue of Harper's Magazine was published in 1867, and for the first time in its 153-year history, the company has appointed a black woman as its editor-in-chief. Harper's Bazaar has appointed Lebanese-American Samira Nasir to the top job, having previously held senior positions at leading fashion magazines, but will be serving at the top for the first time.

According to Harper's Bazaar, Samira Nasir will assume her responsibilities from July 6 next month.

Before being appointed Editor-in-Chief of Harper's Bazaar, Samira Nasir was the Fashion Director at Vanity Fair, a well-known magazine, while she also held senior positions as Fashion and Culture Editor in other fashion magazines, including Style, Elle, and Vogue. Samira Nasir's father was a Lebanese Muslim, while her mother was from the Caribbean peninsula of Trinidad.

Samira Nasir's appointment comes at a time when protests against racism are taking place around the world, including in the United States, and people around the world are expressing solidarity with black people. Protests against racism around the world began on May 25 last month, when black George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

George Floyd was killed during a police arrest when a black police officer held his throat under his knee for nine minutes. Following the death of George Floyd, four policemen, including the said police officer, were suspended and charged with murder. Protests erupted around the world, including in the United States, after the death of a black man.
