Islamabad: The number of polio-infected children has increased to 136 in the year 2019 after another polio case has emerged in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
"The new case was reported in the Union Council of Lakki Marwat District, where a 2-year-old baby became infected and her foot paralyzed," said Dr. Rana Safdar, coordinator of the National Emergency Operations Center for Polio.
The child did not receive a single dose of polio vaccine during the routine immunization campaign, he said.
Rana Safdar further said that although the year 2020 has begun, since the child samples were taken last month, the case will be included in the 2019 polio cases.
According to the National Polio Program website, 136 polio cases were reported in 2019, compared to 12 in 2018 and 7 in 2017.
According to provincial data, 92 polio cases were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone, while 25 cases were reported in Sindh, 11 cases in Balochistan and 8 in Punjab.
