ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to amend the tax rules for industrial and commercial consumers for not filing tax returns.
According to a report, a senior FBR official said that from next month, it decided to amend the suspension of supply of electricity and gas to those who did not submit tax returns.
Due to poor response from energy distribution companies, tax laws needed to be amended.
In the past 6 months, Disco has failed to convince industrial and commercial consumers to file an income tax return for the tax year 2019.
In a statement released on social networking site Twitter, Chairman FBR Shabbar Zaidi said that FBR has been instructed to ensure that all industrial and commercial gas and power distribution companies if needed. Customers must be registered and file a return.
"Customers who have not yet filed tax returns take advantage of the time extension," he said.
The government has extended the deadline for filing tax returns till December 16.
Talking to Dawn, Shabber Zaidi said distribution companies have informed the FBR that they do not have data on Consumer National Tax Numbers (NDNs) or national ID cards.
In the past, the government allowed the power connection on the requirement of identification, now it is necessary to get CNIC-based connection, said Shabbar Zaidi.
