The openers gave the West Indies a good start of 73 runs and deprived the South African bowlers of wickets in the first 10 overs. Avon Lewis was aggressive but Lendl Simmons at the other end was overly defensive and scored 16 off 35 balls.

Avon Lewis returned to the pavilion after scoring 56 off 35 balls with the help of 6 sixes and 3 fours. Nicholas Puran played an innings of 12 runs but Kashyap Maharaj got the second wicket by walking him while Simmons' slow innings also came to an end in the next over.
