It was published the following year in the United States, and eight years later, in 1945, in France. Among the 40 investigations of Hercule Poirot published by Agatha Christie between 1920 and 1975, Death on the Nile is one of the most famous, with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926) and The Crime of the Orient Express (1934). The book has undergone adaptations for theatre, radio, television and cinema. The film directed by John Guillermin in 1978 was a great public success, with Peter Ustinov in the role of Poirot.

Death on the Nile Movie Storyline

The rich and beautiful American heiress Linnet Ridgeway falls in love with Simon Doyle, the fiancé of her best friend, Jacqueline de Bellefort, whom the latter has just introduced to her, and marries her without delay. The newlyweds go on their honeymoon, but they are pursued, step by step, by the neglected young woman, who seeks to make their life impossible. In the hotel where they are staying in Aswan, Egypt, they meet Hercule Poirot.

Solicited by Linett, who seeks support to put an end to this untenable situation, Poirot can only see Linett’s anger and fear, as well as the despair and determination of Jacqueline de Bellefort, determined to take her revenge. He senses the possibility of a tragedy. Soon, Poirot, the newlyweds – who hope to have escaped Jacqueline by embarking without announcing it -, as well as various characters, met at the hotel, who will all turn out to have intertwined interests, come together to take a cruise.

On the Nile aboard the S.S. Karnak. The unexpected presence of Jacqueline on the boat further escalates the tension. Soon Linnet is found murdered in her cabin. The most likely suspect, Jacqueline, is one of the few people with an unassailable alibi. Little by little, Poirot’s investigation, assisted by his friend Colonel Race, will lift the veil on the small and big secrets of each character, undermine all the alibis and finally reveal a diabolical scheme. Love, jealousy and betrayal, as well as greed, are the mainsprings of the novel.
