Early Life

Joel Edgerton was born in the Blacktown district of Sydney on June 23, 1974. He completed an exemplary education and attended the gyms assiduously, which earned him a black belt in karate. He joined the Nepean Drama School in Sydney where he gained his theatrical experience and quickly became part of the Sydney Theater Company with which he performed classical and modern plays. He debuted at the same time on television in series like Water Rats and appeared in the film The Competition (1996).

Career

In the early 2000s, his participation in the Australian series The Secret Life of Us make him very popular and opened the doors of cinema to him a little more, notably with a role in the crime film The Hard Word (2002). After stopping the series, he joined Hollywood and served as a half-brother to Darth Vader in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

In 2003, he returned to the antipodes and rubbed shoulders with the finest of Australian cinema (Heath Ledger, Naomi Watts, Geoffrey Rush…) in the historic drama Ned Kelly. In the following years, he demonstrated his eclecticism, by interpreting a knight of the round table in the blockbuster The King Arthur, then a shoe man in the comedy Kinky Boots and a bodyguard in the action movie.

After his world tour of film sets, Joel Edgerton finds the boards in the company of a certain Cate Blanchett for A Streetcar Named Desire. His performance earned him rave reviews and covered him with rewards. Building on this success, he returned to the cinema in 2009 and lent his voice to the animated feature film Meaning of life for $ 9.99, then interpreted an arsonist in The Square 2008, a film he co-wrote the screenplay for and his brother Nash Edgerton.

Increasingly present on screens, his stature and massive physique allow him to play a gangster in the highly awarded Animal Kingdom but also a boxer in Warrior 2011 and a helicopter pilot in the horror film The Thing 2011, the remake of John Carpenter’s cult feature film. In 2013, Joel Edgerton distinguished himself for his seasoned military character in Zero Dark Thirty 2012 than by sharing the top of the poster of The Great Gatsby. Along with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire, he slips into the skin of Tom Buchanan, an unscrupulous millionaire, Gatsby’s rival.
